Difference between Epidural and CSE

I found information online that helped me understand the difference between Epidural and CSE. I always wanted to have a natural birth but sometimes is not only up to you; therefore, C-section is necessary. Then you need to know about CSE. Hey, don’t feel bad if you end up having a C-Section, it is Okay, you and your baby are gonna be fine. I’ll talk about it in another post. Epidural Anesthesia is the most common technique of pain relief during labor. More than 50% of women giving birth at hospitals use epidural.

What exactly is epidural? It is a regional anesthesia that blocks pain in a particular region of the body. You feel no pain and you can move your legs from side to side but not lift them at all. At least that was my experience.

How is the epidural given? First, family and friends need to leave the room so the nurses can do their thing. I was asked and arch my back and remain still. I put a pillow on my chest while sitting up. This position is vital for preventing problems and increasing the epidural effectiveness. A small area on your back will be injected with a local anesthetic to numb it. I felt no pain at all. A needle is then inserted into the numbed area surrounding the spinal cord in the lower back.

After that, a small tube or catheter is threaded through the needle into the epidural space. The needle is then carefully removed, leaving the catheter in place to provide medication either through periodic injections or by continuous infusion. The catheter is taped to the back to prevent it from slipping out.

Combined spinal and epidural anesthesia (CSE) is a regional anesthetic technique, which combines the benefits of both spinal anesthesia and epidural anesthesia and analgesia. The spinal component gives a rapid onset of a predictable block. Don’t worry NO more needles. They supply the anesthesia through the same catheter from where you received the normal epidural.
