With no doubt, our dogs are our first babies. The connection we create with our pets is incredibly unique. They know when we are sad, excited, or happy; they feel us. As we know, dogs have a very strong sense of smell, so when we get pregnant, they catch the changes of scent due to the increase of pregnancy hormones. Another thing that dogs perceive is the changes in our bodies. Oh yes, they can notice your growing bump. But besides that, what can I say about the moment when your dog snuggled close to you and he feels your baby kicking for the first time; that moment is priceless. All this changes make your doggy to, most of the time, be more affectionate and loving with you.
That does not mean that he understands what it’s really happening. He has no idea that very soon, a little baby is going to be his best friend forever.
That is why we have nine month to acclimate our dogs for that experience.

How to prepare your dog for the addition of a human baby brother/sister?
- Gradually change your dog’s routine: it’s recommended to do this before the newborn arrives, so the dog does not associate all the changes with the baby. Some dogs sleep in bed with their owners, others in separated couches but in the same room. If you are willing to change that, start now, and gradually make him feel comfortable enough to sleep in other places before the arrival. Just to point an example.
- Set boundaries: only-baby spaces, like the nursery. Train your doggy to stay away from the selected areas.
- Establish new schedules: maybe the time you walk your dog is going to change because you need to do other things with the baby. Start figuring out the new schedules now.
- Play baby sounds: it is a good idea to play sounds like baby crying, laughing, or cooing, for example, so your dog get use to it. What about this record?
- Adapt you dog to baby smells: it would be great if you add some baby scents like using baby soap or baby lotion in your hands every day, that way he gets use to it.
- Expose your dog to babies and toddlers: how good is your dog with kids? Be extra careful with the introduction if he is not that friendly with the little ones.
- Bring baby’s scent item: while you are still in the hospital with your newborn, bring an used item of the baby’s clothing or a baby blanket home so the dog can get used to the child’s scent.
- Control excitement behavior: we all know that dogs get really enthusiastic when we get home. In this case, it’s going to be extra excited for him since you will be away for a few days. So when you get home that day, be sure to greet your dog and he drains his energy before introducing the baby.
- Don’t expect he is loving and caring from the first moment: it’s a mix of emotions for them, remember dogs can be very jealous. Pay special attention to your dog, pamper him and make him feel he is still very loved.
- Don’t over react when he takes a baby toy: he is used to own all toys in the house. It takes some time for him to figure out what toys are Okay for him and what others are not.
- Always supervise: for the first few months, keep an eye on both of them, never leave them along until you are 100% sure the dog gets along with the baby and they have a strong bond.
- Dog-only zone: it’s also recommended to establish an area just for your dog. Sometimes they will need to be away and sleep along without a crying baby next to it.
Be patient, most of the dogs, no matter the breed, get along with babies quickly.

Sin duda, nuestros perros son nuestros primeros bebés. La conexión que creamos con nuestras mascotas es increíblemente única. Saben cuándo estamos tristes, emocionados o felices; ellos nos entienden. Como sabemos, los perros tienen un fuerte sentido del olfato, por lo que cuando quedamos embarazadas, perciben los cambios de aroma debido al aumento de las hormonas del embarazo. Otra cosa que los perros perciben son los cambios en nuestros cuerpos. Oh sí, ellos pueden notar tu creciente pancita. Pero además de eso, ¿qué puedo decir sobre el momento en que tu perro se acurruca cerca de ti y siente a tu bebé pateando por primera vez? Ese momento es increible. Todos estos cambios hacen que tu perrito sea, la mayoría de las veces, más cariñoso contigo.
Eso no significa que él entienda lo que realmente está sucediendo. Es por eso que tenemos nueve meses para aclimatar a nuestros perros para esta experiencia.
¿Cómo preparar a tu perro para la adición de un hermano / hermana humano?
- Cambia gradualmente la rutina de tu perro: se recomienda hacerlo de esta manera antes de que llegue el recién nacido, de modo que el perro no asocie todos los cambios con el bebé. Algunos perros duermen en la cama con sus dueños, otros en camitas separadas pero en la misma habitación. - Establece nuevos horarios: tal vez el tiempo en que sacas a caminar a tu perro cambie porque necesitas hacer otras cosas con el bebé. Comienza con los nuevos horarios desde ahora.
- Reproduce sonidos de bebé: es una buena idea reproducir sonidos como el llanto, la risa, o el arrullo de bebés, por ejemplo, para que tu perro se acostumbre. Chequea estos sonidos en youtube.
- Adapta a tu perro a los olores de bebé: sería genial si agregas aromas relacionados con infantes como usar jabón o loción para bebés en tus manos cada día, de esa manera él se acostumbrará a los olores.
- Deja que tu perro interactúe con bebés y niños pequeños: ¿qué tan bueno es tu perro con los niños? Ten mucho cuidado a la hora de introducirlos si él no es tan amigable con los más pequeños.
- Trae algún articulo con aroma del bebé: mientras estés en el hospital con tu bebé recién nacido, trae un artículo usado de la ropa o una manta del bebé a la casa para que el perrito se acostumbre al olor del niño.
- Controla el comportamiento de bienvenida: todos sabemos que los perros se vuelven realmente entusiastas cuando llegamos a casa. En este caso, va a ser muy emocionante para él, ya que estarás fuera por unos días. Entonces, cuando llegues a casa ese día, asegúrate de saludar a tu perro primero y que libere toda esa energía antes de presentarle al bebé.
- No esperes que sea cariñoso y comprensivo desde el primer momento: es una mezcla de emociones para ellos, recuerda que los perros pueden ser muy celosos. Presta especial atención a tu perrito, hazle sentir que el sigue siendo muy amado.
- No reacciones impulsiva cuando agarre un juguete del bebé: está acostumbrado a que todos los juguetes de la casa son de él. Toma un tiempo para que descubra qué juguetes son de él y qué cuales no.
- Siempre supervisa: durante los primeros meses, vigílalos a los dos, nunca los dejes solos hasta que estés 100% segura de que el perrito se lleva bien con el bebé.
- Zona exclusiva para perros: también se recomienda establecer un área solo para tu perro. A veces necesitarán estar lejos y dormir sin un bebé llorando al lado.
